Recreation
on Cape Cod is defined
by some as lying on a towel
with a novel in hand, soaking
in relaxation while occasionally
turning pages.
For the more adventurous, however, there is no shortage of activities in which
to enjoy the outdoors. First and foremost, thoughts drift to the sea. Swimming
in summer, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, and snorkeling are exceedingly
popular.
For clamming, make sure to
get a license from town hall
and follow the tide schedules,
particularly on the tidal flats
of Cape Cod Bay. Deep-sea fishing
excursions, particularly for
bass and bluefish, depart from
many of the Cape's harbors.

A visit to Cape Cod would
not be complete without
an opportunity to go whale
watching along Stellwagen Bank, one of the world's finest whale feeding grounds
located off Cape Cod Bay. Naturalists accompany the excursions departing from
Provincetown, Barnstable, and Plymouth harbors. Inland, golf is one of Cape
Cod's most popular pursuits.
There are 33 public and
13 private courses-the
nation's
highest per capita. Call 888-332-2732 to order a Golf Guide.
Biking is encouraged throughout
Cape Cod, particularly on the
26-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail
from South Dennis to Wellfleet,
the three and a half-mile Shining
Sea Bike Path from Falmouth to Woods Hole, and the spectacular 14-mile loop
path
along both sides of the Cape Cod Canal. Hikers can enjoy nature trails and
walking paths in each of the
Cape's 15 towns, as well as
combing the beach in the footsteps
of Thoreau.
